The George Orwell's quote says that freedom is saying what people do not want to hear.

Freedom is the ability to act without something external limiting our will and our action itself. The moment we are free, then we have the right to express our opinion on general issues.

Thus, in freedom itself, we can give opinions even if they are against a public opinion or another individual opinion because we have the full right.

Being free is beneficial because it allows us to compare ourselves with other people's opinions and not subordinate to others. So we can build our thought and have the freedom to choose what is proper and reasonable for us.

Not having freedom forces us to follow a single path dictated by a single person or a small group of people. Their opinions do not necessarily reflect our ideas and opinions.
